So I know you know....the HoH competition barely lasted long enough for most of us to turn off the TV after the live show ended and walk to our computers. I'm thankful that I booted up my computer and turned on the live feeds during the last commercial break, because otherwise I would have missed it, too.
Because at 14 minutes after the hour, all of the house guests were already back inside the house, dealing with their new (old) reality.
New HoH: Vanessa
Returning Juror: Johnny Mac
I was prepared to settle in for a few hours of live feed updates. I had a cold beer ready. I explained the situation to my dog, who does not like her regular bedtime routine interrupted by these pesky endurance competitions.
But I barely had time to snap two photos during the competition. The live feeds are always super slow during these competitions, and the feeds were interrupted constantly as players either fell or were eliminated.
If you don't know, the entertainment industry is heavily governed by unions, rules, and regulations. If the Producer's voice is broadcast over the live feeds, then they have to be paid as performers, which is not part of the Big Brother budget. The recorded BB voice you hear calling them to the DR, telling them to "Shut it down" or "Clip the microphone to your shirt" is the only performer they want us to hear.
So we don't get to hear Production talk to them about the competition, to enforce the rules or give them other direction. It's not some big conspiracy to pull the wool over our eyes. I've been doing this for years now, and sometimes the people you are pulling for win, and sometimes the people you don't care for win. And that's it.
The competitors were told that they had to keep both feet on the wooden disc. You can see below that Jackie (with the pink stripes on her shorts) had both feet on the disc at this point. And you can also see all of the worried faces of the losers on the sidelines.
Julia fell off her disc during the commercial break, even before the last segment of the live show. I heard her say later that she slipped. But then, as that last segment of the CBS show was underway, Steve fell off, and then Meg.
Then just seconds later, after the broadcast ended, we heard Vanessa say "Jackie is sitting down" or something along those lines, and we got FISH.
When we returned, all of the jurors but Johnny Mac were gone....they disappeared. We know from BB15 that as they are eliminated, they walk through a door in the wall and vanish, but we didn't get to see that here. And there was PLENTY of tension in the house when the Jury walked in and fake-hugged people. So I think we got cheated out of some good old-fashioned sour grapes bitching during this competition, as well as some secret-spilling, or lie-spewing.
They didn't have time for that. They were too busy trying to hang on for dear life, apparently. Was it really that hard? Did the ropes spin around too fast? I saw that some of them were spinning, but that big silver hand wasn't really smacking them. From what I've seen in past years, you could control how hard you started spinning by how you interacted with the big obstacle.
Vanessa and Johnny Mac were the only ones up there...and Vanessa congratulated him, saying he was back in the game. Johnny made some sort of comment that he wanted to win HoH, though, because he still had work to do, or unfinished business.
It sounded like they were both promising each other they were safe, and they were making a deal. Vanessa said she really needed a letter from Mel, and could spend another hour up there if she needed to. I heard Johnny say "let's do it then" and we went to FISH.
And when we returned a moment later, it was over. Vanessa won.
So I thought that a deal was made, but I heard later that Johnny refused to verbally acknowledge a deal, and he said that when he tried to re-adjust his position, he slipped and fell.
Just like that.
There was an uneasy feeling out there. I think Steve had some fear at that point. He said later that he had been hoping for a competition like this one, which was an endurance challenge that he thought he could win.
I guess the BB Crew's hopes for a big overtime check this week were dashed....casual fans might think that the results this week will be boring, with Johnny Mac coming right back in the house, and Vanessa in charge. But those of us in the know....real fans of the game....will know that even if we can predict the result (i.e. James being targeted, Meg as the 2nd option), there will be subtle or not-so-subtle undercurrents of rebellion.
***AND NOW, FROM THE FEEDWATCHER ARCHIVES***
Here is a peek at a similar competition from BB14---the house guests had to stand on a disc and spin around the sun. They also got whacked by a large object, and were also sprayed with some sort of paint-substance that got in their mouths in an unpleasant manner. Danielle actually vomited after she fell. And they went for about an hour, I think, which seemed short at the time, but not compared to what just happened tonight.
The set was more exciting in BB14. That's for sure. Lots of bright colors that looked great on TV. And I remember Ian saying there were a lot of things for him to look at on the roof to keep him occupied while he hung on, eventually winning the competition.
I don't know how Production will be able to fashion an entire segment about how this competition played out. I'm hoping there was some drama with the Jurors as they left the backyard, but I doubt it, since I didn't hear them talk about it later. I supposed we'll have to settle for more of those "funny" pranks....AGAIN.
As a bonus for added infotainment, here is a bit of the jury's participation in the BB15 HoH competition, where they had PLENTY of time to all talk to each other as they tried to catch 10 balls while standing on a tiny moving platform. They also got hit with real sprinklers (hard, too) and even had a "heckler" run through the backyard to distract them.
And, because we all relish speculating over conspiracies, here is a reminder about how the internet went wild with the idea that Helen Kim was pushed. (Later refuted by Helen, of course.)
After the competition, the drama in the house was much more suspenseful than the competition itself.. Liz keeps complaining about how dizzy and nauseous she is, and Austin is FUMING about the comment that Johnny Mac made about having unfinished business.
Julia: Oh my god-ah...I hate him. He needs to leave right now.
Austin: He sealed his fate by saying that.....he better hope he wins the PoV if he wants to stay. He's coming after us! He's coming after us! I want to walk out there and throttle him....but I'll try not to.
Austin says that Johnny didn't take Vanessa's deal that she offered him during the competition, and after that he "fell like a buffoon".
Austin: Him coming back is my worst nightmare.
Because Steve was the 2nd player to fall, and Shelli was the juror who lasted longest after Johnny Mac, they are now regretting keeping Steve over Johnny Mac.
Julia: If we had kept Steve, Shelli would be the one in here, and she might be HoH.
(Ah, the "Coulda Shoulda Woulda" regrets....the gift that keeps on giving.)
Vanessa had a quick meeting with Austin, and kept saying she can't believe that just happened, that she won a physical competition. She attributes her success at her strange abilities of contortion. (She has mentioned that in the house....how she can bend and contort herself.)
Vanessa: I'm the oldest....and the fattest...
Austin: You're not fat.
Vanessa: I'm the most out-of-shape.....I can't believe that just happened. I wanted it so bad....I would have tried to hold on for another hour.
Vanessa: Why didn't he take my offer?
Austin: He just said it...he's coming after me and the Twins!
Vanessa: Did I just win that? How in the hell did that happen? Don't expect me to win another physical comp....because I can't believe that happened. Boy...you tell me that I'm on the chopping block and I can really pull it out...
(No comment from Austin about that little remark.)
Austin: I just want to go at Johnny's throat for saying he wants to do what he needs to do, but I'm trying to stay calm.
(Note to Security: DO NOT give them alcohol until Austin calms down. But of course, they really don't have any security...did you know that? When the shit comes down Production yells at them over the intercom to separate from each other. I think someone would need to be on the ground after a real physical assault before anyone would EVER come in the house to break it up. And even then, NO ONE on staff would be bigger or stronger then Austin. Which is why Devin was so scary, too, but at least they had a police officer in there last year who had some tricks up his sleeve.)
(Little Willie Hantz headbutted Chef Joe and still no one came in the house to help out. Can you imagine the injuries to the rather frail Johnny Mac if Austin headbutted him with his huge hairy noggin?)
(FYI The live feeds were down for over THREE hours that night, as we all waited to find out what happened....Willie ended up being ejected from the show, not even allowed at the Finale, and got arrested almost as soon as he got home to the swamps.)
Note that during this conversation between Vanessa and Austin, Johnny did walk through the bathroom and added a few comments to the conversation. I did not hear Austin reply or speak to him. I did hear Johnny tell someone at some point that he "didn't really have any good jury stories". Ha ha ha.
And Vanessa did tell Austin that this week she needs to make decisions that are good for her game, but assured him that he and the Twins are safe, saying they won't even be used as pawns. Austin appreciated that, and says he will support whatever she decides to do.
Vanessa had a pleasant-enough conversation with James, talking about her disbelief about winning tonight. James was polite, but you could tell he was trying hard to be interested and enthusiastic.
Which is what he's supposed to do at a time like this. It's the game.
I think Liz said that she was still so nauseous that she wasn't even hungry. (Wow.) But shortly thereafter I believe I saw both Twins eating something voraciously out of matching orange bowls.
They are starting to replay the live show in their heads, and discuss the jurors.
Vanessa: Shelli's energy was really off tonight. She was smiling and everything, but she seemed really angry.
Austin: Well, those two girls aren't really big fans of you (Jackie & Becky), so I'm sure your name has come up.
Austin seems very angry at the returning Jurors' lackluster HoH comp performance.
Austin: I told you that those girls just wanted to party.....they are all over it and just wanted to drop and go back to the Jury house.
There is a lot of additional grief in the house when they realize that while they were outside, "they" took all of their headbands, so now they can't play Slingband. (Vanessa told Johnny she HATES Slingband.)
So, there will be additional sorrow in the house this week.
Also, at one point Austin was alone with James and went on and on with hatred for Johnny, saying that "he's coming after me and the Twins! he's coming after me and the Twins!". Like he expects James to be really angry at that? Wake up, you Big Dummy.
Vanessa has a quick chat with Johnny, asking him why he didn't take the deal she offered.
Johnny: I couldn't take that deal in public.
Vanessa: Don't worry, you're good. Everybody thinks I'm putting you up, so they won't see it coming. Now let me get out of here so no one sees us talking.
Vanessa also spoke with Steve, saying he could stay upstairs with her a few nights if he wants to, because the HoH room does get lonely. And she thinks that if they both work with Johnny, they can beat the AusTwins in any competition.
So that is exciting news for the fans. It might not happen this week, but it's gonna happen, particularly with the double eviction looming.....wouldn't THAT be exciting....
Earlier in the afternoon, when Johnny was well aware that he would be voted out that night, he had a private conversation with Vanessa and told her to basically Ask Me Anything. Vanessa took advantage of this and learned the following from Johnny Mac.
* Johnny is not related to Clay.
* The AusTwins didn't know that Becky planned to backdoor Vanessa until the day before. (Vanessa said that Steve didn't tell her, either.)
* At that point in the day (one hour until rehearsal), the AusTwins still hadn't informed Johnny that he would be the one leaving that night. They're cowards, he says.
* Johnny said Steve came to him in Week #4 with a Final Two deal but Johnny kind of scoffs at the idea of that deal now. (Because he's learned that Steve kept A LOT of things from him.)
* Johnny says Vanessa can trust Steve, but Steve is too big of a pussy to pull the trigger on the other side.
* Johnny threw the Slip 'n' Slide competition to Becky, and also the Nosa Scotia spelling competition. Vanessa wondered how he came up with spelling the word "boogers" and Johnny explained that there was a huge nose in the backyard. (Basic, but true.)
* Johnny did not throw the DuBob BoB competition---he really had trouble with that one. And did not throw the Grunge one where he had to dig for keys and smash pumpkins.
* Johnny says he hates playing "PotBall" with a passion, and the way everyone yells "Pot Ball! Pot Ball!". (Johnny: Pot Ball! Go fuck yourself.)
* Johnny knows everyone thinks he is stupid. (Vanessa: You're a doctor, dude! You got through medical school! I don't care how you laugh...I know you're smart!)
* Johnny says he knew James tried to throw the BoB to backdoor Austin, because James made a comment in front of him and didn't think Johnny would understand it.
They both seem committed to the idea of working together if Johnny returns to the game (the result of all of yesterday's scampering) Which he did, of course, setting up some major drama for the next few weeks. The Freaks vs. Geeks, if you will.
